Lack of Ethics
Ethics is set of beliefs/guidelines that question a person’s sense of morality. Ethics help one understand the concepts of good and evil, right and wrong etc. The understanding of ethics allows a person or an organization to lay down a set of guidelines that helps him/her make the right decisions easily under trying times.
Ethical behavior helps an individual professionally and personally in all different kinds of situations. Lack of ethics causes a lack of understanding between the right and wrong, and in hence in making the right decision. For example, if there is a situation which is exceedingly tough, then a person is pressed to reassess himself or herself about the way to proceed or to proceed at all. Everyone would have encountered such a situation at some point. If a person follows a code and has a sense of ethics, it becomes easy for him/her to decide whether to continue or not. Ethics drive a person’s actions and even emotions on a daily basis. A code of ethics can make or break a person’s life.
Every morning, deciding to religiously exercise and doing it on a regular basis is a process that is backed by a person’s ethics. Hence the moral judgment that tells a person that exercising is right helps keep that person healthy. One can always opt to sleep for a longer time and hampering one’s health in a process. Hence ethics keep you healthy.
It can be easily seen that right from trivial decisions like choosing and practicing healthy habits to big decisions (at workplace or otherwise) that can affect hundreds or thousands of people, ethics play an important role in the well being of people.
Take the example of totalitarian regimes which have been headed by brutal dictators. These heads of state lacked in moral ethics and hence let thousands die under them. However, chaos reigned under their rule. Most of such regimes did not last. However, ethics is not about these regimes or their heads. Ethics are about an individual and the moral high ground that he/she stands on. They help a person grow and develop over a period of time. The right choices of ideas and ideals help a person grow positively and the lack of right values prove detrimental to the overall growth.
The best feature of ethical rules is that they are yours to choose and follow. They are not handed out to person at birth but are gathered over a period of time. However, there are certain factors that affect the choice of ethics imbibed and followed by a person. The first and the most important of all such influences is that of the family. The family members help establish the boundary of right and wrong in a person. It is following these boundaries that a person learns more about them and proceeds to choose his/her own. Then the culture that a child is brought up in also affects his/her understanding of right and wrong. With introspection and experience, the ethics evolve in a person.
